No
5. Do you believe Texas State University does a well enough job of preventing future sexual assaults?
They could do more
10. How would you define sexual assault?
“Acting forcibly on someone without consent.”
11. Have you previously experienced or witnessed sexual assault? If so, explain?
“A friend of mine had just broken up with her boyfriend and went to a party in September of 2018. She had a [girlfriend] who she had asked to not leave her alone with [one of the basketball players] because they were both intoxicated and she did not want anything to happen and she was not strong enough mentally to stand up for herself,” said Heald. Eventually she was forced into going back to his apartment and without consent he proceeded to have sex with her.”
Once asked if she thought this damaged her friend mentally Heald said, “yes, because it a) made it feel like people were judging her, b) she feels guilty and c) she still has to see that person everyday and that’s what she thinks of when she looks at him.
12. What can you do, personally, to prevent sexual assault?
“I feel like if I see something suspicious I can I have more of a voice and question the girl/guy to whether the situation is comfortable and okay,” said Heald.
13. What should Texas State University do to discourage/condemn sexual assault, and how can they better help the victim(s) on campus?
“ You can have a number that you can text or notify if you are in a bad situation. Or if anyone is ever feeling uncomfortable, you can have a better system of counselors where people can come talk to them,” said Heald.”

5. Do you believe Shenandoah University does a well enough job of preventing future sexual assaults?
Yes
10. How would you define sexual assault?
A non consensual act of sexual misconduct (touching anywhere on a person’s body without their consent)
11. Have you previously experienced or witnessed sexual assault? If so, explain?
Yes. I was raped on campus September 29, 2017. I was incapacitated and a boy took advantage of me.
12. What can you do, personally, to prevent sexual assault?
Use the buddy system at parties, stop someone making “jokes” about rape (even if all it is, is “hey can you not say that around me? It is not cool”), check on people who look uncomfortable at parties or in public, trust me better safe than sorry. Be an active bystander.
13. What should Shenandoah University do to discourage/condemn sexual assault, and how can they better help the victim(s) on campus?
More strict punishment on sexual perpetrators, survivor centers on campus. Shenandoah has The [Not Just] Women’s Center for survivors to come in and talk confidently. Also to help them if they would like to report these circumstances. More awareness for the center for survivors who need to talk. Do not make survivors feel like victims, they have survived a traumatic event. Call them survivors. We are also currently working on a project campus wide, that is my brain child, for a consent campaign that will get students attention and do it in a clever way.
